No, I don’t mean the ‘Casper the friendly ghost’ type of ghost. Ghosting is a term that we are hearing more and more in daily life. You’ve been on a date… and then you have been ghosted. Your friend just stops texting you back... you are being ghosted. You apply for a job... you don’t hear back; you are being ghosted.
In our world, we experience people applying for a job. The recruiter reaches out, but calls, texts, voice notes, emails are all ignored. We’re ghosted! In addition, we can engage people, spend time listening to the candidate, talk about relevant opportunities, agree on next steps and work hard to do the right thing, then follow up and... silence! It can be very confusing and perplexing, but above all, there doesn’t seem to be a benefit to anyone in the process.
If you recognise that you might do this, consider the impact:
  1. Remember, it is a small industry – you never know when you may cross paths with the person you are ghosting. If you are a candidate, you never know when you may need that recruiter. If you ghost us, we are less likely to share great opportunities with you. Reputation is everything
  2. You have a personal brand to protect and build. Basically, another way of saying it’s a small industry
  3. It can actually come across as quite rude, even if not intended that way. You don’t want to be remembered as someone who can’t communicate
  4. If you are a company/recruiter who is ghosting your candidate, this will have a huge effect on your company's reputation. In a market that is tough to recruit, you want to be doing all you can to offer the best candidate experience ever
  5. It can leave people feeling rejected, not good enough and frustrated. It can affect people's mental health and it isn’t kind and it isn’t necessary
Recruitment and job searching can be difficult at the best of times, so let’s work together to make it an enjoyable experience.
Let’s all agree that ghosting is toxic and get back to good old communication and openness. Changed your mind? Not a problem, let us know. Feeling poorly? Not a problem, let us know. Had a bad experience with recruiters in the past and not trusting the process? Not a problem, tell us about it and what you expect. A quick message is all it takes and we will understand.
We don’t ghost our candidates, everyone gets a response, and we ensure we have a central function to ensure consistency throughout the process. Let’s work together with mutual respect and harmony!
